Fairplay - Soul II Soul / Bugz in the Attic RMX - from Got the Bug 2 (BBE)

It's hard to overstate the influence that the Bugz had on me both as a DJ and producer... it's great to see a second comp of their excellent remix work that laid the foundation for a movement and sound that sadly seems to be in terminal decline. On the bright side it led to some amazing tracks and this one sows the seeds of dubstep really clearly!

Falling Masonry EP - George Levin (BBE)

Interesting tracks - I sense a strong 80s influence here! The Better Life is my pick of the three tracks, the addition of Clara Hill's lovely vocals works really, really nicely. I really like the vibe of this one in particular and it will definitely be on my playlists.

That Lite - DJ Vadim feat Juice Lee (Astronote RMX) (BBE)

Vadim is soooo damn strong and here's yet another example. This is my kind of hip hop for sure - a crisp head nod beat, fat bass, quality rapping and intelligent instrumentation. Love it, love it, love it.

Foolish Moon - Nick van Gelder ft Nina Miranda (BBE)

A jazzy and funky track that could fit equally nicely in a housey or beat-y set, I'll be playing this one for sure, it's a cracker. Love the flute and as ever Nina Miranda's voice sounds beautiful - it's just a shame there isn't a bit more of it in the track!

The Apartment - Dynas (BBE)

Straight-up hip hop, nothing too experimental here, which is good as this is brilliantly produced and delivered. Sharp beats, deep bass, top quality rapping and perfectly chosen samples and instrumentation - not to mention the superstar guests - this is an excellent hip hop album with something for everyone. Even the skits are funny! Oh and it's killing me where that brass sample's from on 'It's My Turn'...

Back Street Lust Remixes - Kinny (Tru Thoughts)

Yes! The Azaxx sounds works really well with this track. The Kinny LP is definitely a grower for me and Azaxx's funky/breaksy/ballsy vibe matches up with the vocals to create a track I'll certainly be hammering. Afro Love Forest was one of my picks of the LP and always raises a smile with me 'cos I think it sounds vaguely rude ("down in my afro forest of love"? c'mon!). Again, it's a perfectly chosen remix with a cracking rolling beat - love the toy box sound too - and when it all kicks off half-tempo jungle stylee, well it's unexpected and kind of leftfield but nice, nice, nice! Love both of these and will be playing em like mad.

Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls (Ubiquity)

Yes, I totally love this! A combination of like minds has created some genius moments - ome of which that take me back to tracking down early Mo'Wax stuff in dusty record shops and others point the way to a funky future. I love the vintage crackle in the background of all of these tracks, without it being self-consciously "lo-fi" - my picks are Dime Bag Conspiracy, Ringa Ding Ding Ding and Ancient Scrolls. The upbeat-ness of this collection marks it out from the introspective vibe that a lot of this kind of stuff has for me. Wish I could've been in the studio... sounds like a riot!

Music is my Medicine - Clutchy Hopkins meets Lord Kenjamin (Ubiquity)

Off to an odd start with spookily out of tuned instruments, this is pretty odd stuff! Slightly unsettling instrumentals that sound like they've been recorded in someone's bathroom. Doesn't sound like much of a recommendation but actually it really works and the results are enjoyable. There's a much dubbier feel to this set than previous Clutchy Hopkins stuff and it's a genre that suits the free approach at work here. It's like the award-winning soundtrack to some completely trippy abstract film. Picks for me are Brother John, Lord Kenji and the excellently-titled Gourds of the Desert. Wish I'd thought of that one!
